Michelin, lFPEN, and Axens Announce Successful Progress in BioButterfly" R&D Proiect

Date:2025/12/22

Rueil-Malmaison, France, 11 December 2025 – Significant progress has been made in the BioButterfly™ project, a collaborative initiative by Michelin, IFPEN, and Axens aimed at producing biobased butadiene from bioethanol. Since the commissioning of its first industrial-scale demonstration plant in Bassens in July 2023, the project has successfully validated the production process using both conventional and advanced (second-generation) bioethanol, ensuring a fully biobased feedstock.

The demonstration plant has confirmed the flexibility and robustness of the technology in handling diverse bioethanol sources. The biobased butadiene produced has been successfully polymerized into butadiene rubber (BR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), meeting stringent quality specifications required for demanding industrial applications, including tire manufacturing.

The R&D phase is nearing completion, with technology homologation targeted by mid-2026, paving the way for global commercialization. BioButterfly™ represents an advanced pathway for producing butadiene with a reduced carbon footprint, supporting the transition toward renewable resources in the elastomer industry.

The project has received support from ADEME, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, and Bordeaux Metropole.
