Continental Advances Circular Economy with Strategic Investment in Pyrolysis Technology

Date:2025/10/13
Continental has strengthened its commitment to sustainable manufacturing by acquiring a specialized patent portfolio and commissioning a pilot plant for producing high-quality pyrolysis oil from waste rubber. This move marks a significant step toward recycling complex rubber compounds on an industrial scale.

The technology, developed originally by British startup Low Sulphur Fuels and now enhanced by ContiTech, uses a thermal process in a low-oxygen environment to break down rubber waste. The output includes a gaseous energy source, recovered carbon black, and a high-grade oil comparable to fossil crude—particularly suitable as a raw material in rubber and plastics production.

Dr. Michael Hofmann, Chief Technology Officer at ContiTech, emphasized the breakthrough: “This technology closes a critical gap in the circular materials economy. We can now recover high-quality raw materials from rubber waste and reintegrate them into production—reducing dependence on crude oil while making reuse economically viable.”

While pyrolysis has historically faced challenges in scalability and product quality, recent innovations in purification—such as those implemented by ContiTech—have improved both the technical feasibility and economic attractiveness of the process.
