SEOUL, South Korea—Nexen Tire Corp. has received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term emissions reduction goals, validating that the targets align with climate science standards.

The SBTi—a partnership between the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, WWF, and CDP—certifies whether corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets support the Paris Agreement’s aim to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Nexen aims to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 58.8% by 2034 from a 2023 baseline, while also reducing Scope 3 emissions by 35% over the same period.

The endorsement is expected to strengthen Nexen’s partnerships with global automakers as the industry advances toward carbon neutrality. The company noted that the validated GHG data will also enhance its performance in global ESG evaluations.

“This approval reflects our commitment to a climate strategy that meets global standards,” said CEO John Bosco (Hyeon Suk) Kim. “We are dedicated to achieving carbon neutrality through science-based targets and company-wide action.”

Nexen will implement a detailed roadmap to meet these goals. The company tracks emissions categories closely and holds monthly ESG committee meetings to drive reduction efforts, including improving facility efficiency, accelerating the energy transition, and expanding renewable energy use.
