The demonstration tyre had passed all applicable regulatory testing and company internal testing, Goodyear said.

In addition, it had lower rolling resistance compared to a reference tyre made with traditional materials, the company said.

“Lower rolling resistance means this demonstration tyre has the potential to offer better fuel savings and carbon footprint reduction,” Goodyear said.

The company said the 90% sustainable material tyre was currently at the demonstration stage and producing it at scale would require further collaboration with its supply base to identify the volume of materials needed.

Meanwhile, Goodyear announced plans to launch a tyre made from 70% sustainable material this year.

“We continue to make progress toward our goal of introducing the first 100% sustainable-material tyre in the industry by 2030,” Chris Helsel, Goodyear’s senior vice president, global operations, and chief technology officer, said.

Carbon black is included in tyre production to give compound reinforcement and increase product life and is traditionally made by burning a range of petroleum products.

Goodyear’s new 90% sustainable material demonstration tyre, however, features four different carbon blacks produced from methane, carbon dioxide, and plant-based oil and end-of-life tyre pyrolysis oil feedstocks.

Soyabean oil is used in the company’s tyres to maintain the product’s rubber compound pliability in changing temperatures. To date, eight Goodyear product lines, and some racing tyres, include soyabean oil.

Goodyear uses silica – RHA silica in the 90% sustainable material tyre – to help improve grip and reduce fuel consumption, while the polyester used is recycled from plastic bottles and other plastic waste.
